Understanding...

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. - 2Timothy 2:15 We are told in the Bible to study the scriptures. It is not enough to listen to someone teaching or preaching at church. We are to study for ourselves. We are to rightly divide the word, which means to properly understand it for what it says and accept it for the truth that it is.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. - Acts 17:11 The Berean's were called more noble because they accepted the scriptures with an open mind and because they searched the scriptures (studied them) to see if the Apostles were really teaching them the whole truth. We should always study to see if we are being taught the truth. Many times people teach things that are not correct and don't even know they are teaching error.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. - 1Corinthians 2:14 The natural, or unsaved man can't understand the things of God. The scriptures are spiritually discerned. God and His Word are supernatural and above our natural understanding. In order to properly understand scripture, we must receive Christ as our Savior. Then He can reveal His Word to us as we study it.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2Timothy 1:7 God has given each one of us a sound mind, or a brain that can think and reason. Some of us have more of an ability than others. God can reveal Himself and His Word to us as we study. Studying God's Word can seem difficult but, if we are trusting Him, He will lead us into His truth in His time.
