There are 66 different books in the Bible and each of these has a different name. Each book is devided into chapters like most other books. Each chapter is numbered. Then each chapter is is devided into verses. Each verse is also numbered.
A Bible "reference" is like an address to tell where to find a verse. A reference has three parts: 1) The name of the book, 2) The chapter number, and 3) the verse number. This is a Bible reference...
In the above example, "John" is the name of the book where we can find the verse. The 3 is the chapter number that will contain the verse. The number after the colon, (:), is the verse number within that chapter. So, the verse that we want is in the third chapter of the book of John and it is the 16th verse in that chapter.
The names of books in the Bible are usually printed at the top of the page. There is usually a list of the books in the front of the Bible along with the page number that they start on. The chapter numbers are usually large numbers, and the verse numbers are small. The following is a sample of part of the Bible, find the Bible verse; Philippians 1:6 and read it out loud.

Philippians
1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, 5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; 6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: 7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. |
