Mental Pictures...

Painting mental pictures can be a powerful tool to help children understand and remember. We remember what we see much better that what we read or hear. If you can get the kids to picture in their mind what they are hearing about, they will remember much better. The following is an example...

A long time ago, I worked in a gas station. I remember one time I was changing the oil in a car, and instead of going into the drain can, the dirty oil poured out all over me. I was just covered with grease and oil. Yuchh! Let's pretend that we were real good friends, and I had to work at the gas station. Because it is Sunday, you are going to church dressed in your brand new white outfit. On your way to church, you stop by the gas station to say "Hi". But, because I love you so much, I give you a great big hug. - Do you think that you would make me clean, or would I get you all greasy and dirty? Yeah, I would get you all dirty. - That is kind of like the way it is with God. We are all stained with dirty old sin, and if we tried to come to God, we would get him all dirty too. The Bible says that when we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him as our savior, His shed blood washes away all our sin and makes us clean so we can come to God.

Now, I would be willing to bet that if I asked you in a month from now, what happened at the gas station, and what it meant, you would be able to tell me.

Mental pictures can be Bible stories, about your own life or someone elses or even fictional. True stories are usually better.
